The Independent Electoral and
Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has moved to assure Kenyans that everything is in
place for the August 8 Generel Election despite the murder of one of its
employees, Chris Msando.
In a statement released Monday, July
31, the same day Msando's body was discovered at the City Mortuary, IEBC said
despite the deceased being at the center of its ICT systems, he left behind a
competent team that would ensure free, fair and credible elections.
IEBC boss Wafula Chebukati said the
commission understands the tension the killing of Msando has caused in the
country but assured Kenyans that everything is ok.
"The commission is aware of the
discussions in the public sphere regarding possible implications to our ICT
system. We would like to reiterate that the commission has put in place
elaborate business continuity plan to mitigate against a variety of risks
including possible absence of key resource persons," Chebukati said.
Msando went missing on the evening
of Friday, July 28. His family reported the matter to the police and a search
for him began. On Sunday, July 30, the family and the IEBC publicly announced
that Msando had gone missing
On the morning of Monday, July 31,
his car was found parked outside a flat in Roysambu. Gatundu South MP Moses
Kuria took photos of the car and alleged that Msando was enjoying with a woman
in the area.
Hours later, the nation was shocked when his
family who had visited City Mortuary found his body lying there. Records
indicated Msando's body was brought to the morgue by police on Saturday, July
29, at around 11 am.
He was found murdered in a thicket
in Kiambu county. Msando has been described as an IT guru who was very learned
in his job and was among the very few people who knew where the IEBC servers
are located.
