Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Mike
Sonko will be looking to Bangkok to provide better working conditions for
hawkers in Nairobi.
During his manifesto launch, the
new-look Mike Sonko shared his vision for the nation’s development with Nairobi
residents. The Bangkok, Thailand model that he was proposing includes closure
of specific streets to allow hawkers to sell their wares. The closure will take
place at specific times.
For example, a street may be closed
from 6pm to midnight and weekends. Before that, consultation will be done in
with the other traders and road users so that the solution favours both
street-vendors and road users. His mwananchi-centred approach also included
abolishments of business permits for mama mbogas as well as reduction of land
rates. He pledged to construct shades for small-business owners which would be
free for them to use.
This was to curb the grabbing of land set
aside for markets by influential businesspeople, especially in areas such as
Eastleigh. He stated that he has plans to seek investors to help in construction
of modern markets. He hopes to achieve all this within his first 100 days in
office, with the help of his right hand man, former Vivo Energy MD Polycarp
Igathe.
