NASA presidential candidate Raila
Odinga enjoyed viewership of about 9.6 million Kenyans during his solo
appearance at the Presidential Debate. Raila showed up for the debate on Monday
July 24 and savoured the moment alone after his main competitor President Uhuru
Kenyatta snubbed the event.
The debate organized by the local
media was beamed live by seven TV stations and more than 30 radio stations.
According to media research company Geopoll, their Audience Measurement data
showed that the average audience that reported to have watched the debate from
5 - 10 pm was 8.6 million.
The first session of the debate started at
5.30 pm and ended at around 7.30 pm and featured three presidential candidates
Michael Wainaina, Ekuru Aukot and Japhet Kavinga. Three other candidates
including Abdouba Dida,Cyrus Jirongo and Joe Nyaga kept off the first session
of the debate. The second part of the discourse which Raila featured alone
began at 8 pm.
“The highest TV audience recorded
during the Presidential Debate was 9.6 Million viewers between 8.00pm- 8.30pm,”
said Geopoll. The company kept tab on viewership on TV stations including
Citizen, K24, KTN, KTN News, NTV, Inooro and KBC Uhuru now plans to hold 40
radio interviews after missing the much hyped televised Presidential Debate. He
will also hold over 200 campaign meetings in counties around the country ahead
of the August 8 polls.
